The Bronx sleep guide, hour by hour

A Bronx sleep health guide and directory of local sleep centers. Follow the night from nine in the evening to seven in the morning, and find the guide, the directory or the neighborhood page that belongs to each hour.

Start with the room

Sleep begins long before the lights go out. The CDC recommends that adults aged 18 to 60 sleep seven or more hours a night, and its tips start with a quiet, relaxing and cool bedroom, a steady bedtime and no screens for the last half hour. In an apartment building with street noise, a bright window and a hot July night, that takes some planning.

The city sleep guide covers light, noise and summer heat, and points to NYC311 for reporting noise.

What an overnight study looks at

A sleep study records brain waves, breathing, heart rate and blood oxygen while you sleep. Some are done overnight at a sleep center, and some are done at home with a portable device. Two plain guides explain what each one involves, so the words on a referral slip make sense before the appointment.

The overnight log

While most of the borough sleeps, sleep centers around the Bronx are recording the night. The directory lists eleven centers, five with Bronx addresses, three in Queens and three in Manhattan, each with its address and phone number as the center publishes them, in a plain log you can scan in a minute.

Reading the night

By early morning a recording becomes a report: scored stages, a breathing index, an oxygen reading. The results guide defines each term in everyday language, and the dental sleep guide explains the part of the field that happens in a dentist's chair.

6 amFirst streets

Six neighborhoods, one borough

The East Bronx wakes up in pieces: the Throgs Neck waterfront, the oak paths of Pelham Bay Park, the towers of Co-op City, the hospital campuses of Morris Park, the old churchyard at Westchester Square and the quiet streets of Country Club. Each page pairs one sourced fact with the sleep centers listed nearby.

Choose with questions in hand

Picking a sleep center comes down to a few checks you can make yourself: whether the professional holds a New York licence, whether your insurance or Medicaid plan is accepted, and what the visit involves. The guide to choosing a sleep center lists them.
