The largest residential development in the United States

Co-op City has 35 high-rise buildings and seven clusters of townhouses, 236 townhouses in total. Together they hold 15,372 residential units, which makes it the largest residential development in the United States by unit count. The towers come in three types: ten Triple Core buildings of 26 stories, ten Chevron buildings of 24 stories and fifteen Tower buildings of 33 stories. The development covers about 320 acres.

Construction began in May 1966, and residents began moving in in December 1968. The 2010 census counted 43,752 residents, up 7.6 percent from 40,676 in 2000.

A lot of households, a lot of bedrooms

A development of this size is a neighborhood of high-floor bedrooms, shared walls and elevator commutes, and the CDC's sleep ranges apply to every age group in it. Adults aged 18 to 60 should sleep seven or more hours a night, adults aged 61 to 64 should sleep seven to nine hours, and adults aged 65 and older should sleep seven to eight hours.

The CDC also says that quality counts as much as quantity, and that signs of poor quality include trouble falling asleep and waking often at night. Its habits for a better night start with a quiet, cool bedroom and a regular bedtime. For noise from a neighbor or from construction, the city sleep guide explains how NYC311 takes reports.
